Solid-State Drive: Should I consider An Upgrade?

without comments

The Solid-State Drive; one of the latest new developments to hit the world of IT, but is it worth an upgrade? It is most likely that your computer will be using a Hard-Disk Drive (HDD) to store data but as you would expect, the Solid-State Drive (SSD) is advertised as faster, better and more reliable. Let’s take a look at the facts.

SOLID STATE DRIVE

HARD DISK DRIVE

Faster read/write speeds, faster to boot up and restart Slower processing , booting up and restarting
No mechanical parts so more resilient to drops and shocks Mechanical parts so less resilient to drops and shocks
No defragmentation Regular defragmentation required, especially after operations involving large files
Reduces power consumption Consumes 2-3 times more power
Limited number of writes No write limit
120GB storage limit 1TB storage limit
5 times more expensive than HDD on average 5 times cheaper than SSD on average

As you can see, there are positives and negatives to both of the above options, so should you upgrade or not?

This will primarily depend on how intensively you use your computer. If you produce documents and surf the internet then an upgrade won’t make much difference to you apart from a slightly faster boot time and application launch.

However, if you use multiple applications at once or use video editing or heavy graphics applications then upgrading to an SSD will give you a noticeable performance boost. If this description fits your company, why not think about investing in SSDs for your computers?

If you have any questions or want some free advice on whether an upgrade would benefit your company, please get in touch on 0845 3309680 or email sales AT flint-it DOT com
